Alex – Once Upon a Sketch

Once Upon a Sketch is a unique site that pairs journaling with sketch challenges. The current journaling requirement is to write at least 2 sentences about when and why you started scrapbooking. My title is Alex (my first bio son) and the journaling reads…When my “Baby” became a big brother. The journaling strips clarify further and say…Once Madison was born and Alex was 3 1/2 and I was pregnant with Matthew, I figured it was about time for me to start Alex’s Baby Book.

I originally wanted the photo we took at the hospital when Madison was born, showing little Alex holding her propped with a pillow and trying to feed her a bottle with the other hand (with Larry’s help of course), but wasn’t able to find that photo. So, I went with a photo of Alex as a baby…it’s actually a reprint of the photo I used on the very first scrapbook layout I ever made. The intro page to Alex’s Baby Book. 😀

This week, the challenge on The Paper Variety is to include a family member’s title or the word “family” on your paper project. Here’s what I came up with for the challenges:

Materials:

Prima Londonerry Papers
Prima Londonerry flocked rubons
Prima Londonerry chipboard
Prima Londonerry flower
Prima Londonerry mini alphas
American Crafts Gold Glittered Thickers
2 different Maya Road chipboard Alphas
Golden Rod Stiokles

Adhesives:

Helmar Premium Craft Glue
Helmar Liquid Scrap Dots

Tools:

Martha Stewart Doily Lace border punch

The Thickers on my project were provided by Firefly Expressions since they are the featured product this coming week. The scrolls under the layered chipboard circles is a gold glittered Thickers piece that I cut in half and reversed. I then layered 2 prima chipboard pieces on top and then added a gold glittery circle from the same set of Thickers on top of that (right under the flower). My Guy Layout – Sketchy Thursdays Challenge Entry

Oh how I love to combine my dt work with challenges. 😀

The December GDT sketch on Sketchy Thursdays has the additional requirement that your page reflect gratitude or thankfulness. When asked what am I most thankful for or grateful for, the first thing that comes to mind would be my family. Larry and the children. Though I’m usually tempted to scrap the children’s photos for a page like this, when I thought about it more, I kept going back to the thought that our family would not be complete without Larry. I can’t think about the children without also picturing him with them. Playing with them, teasing them, smiling at them, etc…then I knew I wanted to scrap a couple of photos of my handsome hubby that I’ve been holding onto.

This week, on the Firefly Expressions Blog, we’re focusing on Shimmer Papers by The Paper Company. Once I noticed how well the B sides of the Peach and Grass Green papers went with the Prima Pixie Glen collection, I knew I wanted to combine my dt work on ffe w/the ST sketch. 😀 Here’s what I came up with:

The journaling reads: “We might not agree on everything, but I’m thankful for every day we have together & am grateful that we found each other. You make our family complete.”

Now you might be wondering why I started it with “We might not agree on everything”…it’s cuz he’s in his camo…he was hunting the day the photos were taken and I’m not real thrilled with hunting, but it’s a family tradition he grew up with, so we agree to disagree on the subject. 😉

Materials:

Prima Pixie Glen PP
Prima Pixie Glen flocked rubon
Pink Paislee Cushies alphas
The Paper Company shimmer papers
Tattered Angels glimmer mists

Adhesives:

Helmar Quick Fix Adhesive Runner
Helmar Premium Craft Glue

Tools:

EK Success Punch

Firefly Expressions dt Layout – Sketchy Thursdays Challenge entry

For this week’s feature on the Firefly Expression’s Blog, we were sent Dutch Girl papers and diecuts by Cosmo Cricket. After a quick comparison, Nicolle (my best scrappy bud and fellow dt member) and I realized that we were sent the exact same materials to create with. So, to shake things up a bit and make it a little more fun, we decided to use the same sketch too! Since we both love playing along with the Sketchy Thursdays challenges, their 10.27 sketch seemed a natural choice. Here’s what I came up with:

Materials:

Cosmo Cricket Dutch Girl papers
CC Dutch Girl Diecuts
Liquid Pearls
Stickles
twine from the twinery
Pink Paislee Old School Glitter Alphas
Distress Ink

Adhesives:

Helmar Quick Fix Adhesive Runner
Helmar 450 Quick Dry
Helmar Acid Free Glue

Tools:

Martha Stewart Doily Lace border punch

Two Layouts for Paper Secrets November Challenges

I love the gorgeous sketches that Rochelle has been designing for us on Paper Secrets, so I had a lot of fun creating this layout as part of my dt work for the November challenges. I went with the beautiful All About Me collection by Webster’s Pages and added a little subtle texture and interest using a Prima mask and a bit of Helmar magic. 😀

For the brick wall behind the photo, I had really wanted a different Prima mask, but my fave online store was sold out, so I got the mask that features the mortar rather than the brick. To use it effectively, there are several options. I chose to go with a resist technique using Helmar Acid Free Glue. I simple lined up the mask where I wanted the design to appear, and using a foam brush, applied the Helmar Acid Free Glue in the openings by smoothing it over the mask. I then lifted off the mask. Once dry, I misted the image with some Shimmerz Spritz in Rockafella blue and immediately wiped over it lightly with a slightly dampened paper towel to remove the product from the resist areas. It worked like a dream. FYI, this method can also be used with the 450 Quick Dry, Premium Craft Glue and PVA glue that I know of and have tested, so you can use what you have on hand.

Here’s my take on Rochelle’s fabulous sketch for the November Challenge:

Here’s a close up of the brick wall resist:

I’m so excited to be back on the Paper Secrets DT! For my first challenge for the new term, I wanted to do something special. I greatly admire the work of an amazing talented multi-media artist who I first heard about just over a year ago when I started scrapping online. Steph Devlin is not only a designer for Webster’s Pages, Kaisercraft and Prima, she’s also a published author and has designed for numerous magazines. Steph is also one of the co-founders of The Color Room…a great site for fabulous color challenges and a sketch for inspiration. So, for this challenge, I’ve selected one of her pieces (with her permission) for us to lift for our November Scraplift Challenge!

Here’s my lift of her inspiring creation:

To give a subtle shimmer and add a bit of extra texture, I mixed a bit of iridescent medium to Helmar’s Textured Effects and applied it with a brush to the middle flower on the left of the page. I only covered the highlights on the images. It was really hard to capture in a photo, but here’s a close up:

I love that the Textured Effects not only helps add more detail, but it also keeps the iridescent medium on my project, not my fingers, so when I wipe my fingers across the page, I don’t end up with a bunch of shimmer on my fingertips! 😀

I also combined the PS lift challenge with my dt work at Firefly Expressions and incorporated some gorgeous Dove of the East products. 😀
