I Think I Can – dt layout for Sketchabilities Sketch #101

Sketchabilities sketch #101 is now live! 😀 I’ve been absolutely LOVING Karan’s new sketches for the site. They’re great for mixed media pages, but can also be simplified or adapted for other styles as well.

For my example for the sketch, I decided to use 3 pics of Christian at the playground a couple years back. He was exploring a slide for the first time and was determined to climb up it instead of sliding down on it. To our utter amazement, he did succeed after a few attempts. 😀

To mimic the wood chips that cover the entire surface of the playground, I created my own background with a kraft paper foundation. I layered it with Krylon Webbing and their Make It Stone spray. I was also inspired by the Follow the Yellow Brick Road challenge at Flying Unicorn (recipe challenge). Here’s what I came up with:

I think I can

Materials:

Kraft cardstock
Krylon Webbing
Krylon Make It Stone!
Art Anthology Velvet dimensional paint
Graphic 45 papers and brads
Prima leaves
Washi tape
I am Roses flower
Distress Ink and paint
Maya Road chipboard alphas
Signo white pen
EK success punch
Martha Stewart punch
mini clothes pins and jute from my stash

Rise Above It – dt layout for SWAT drill #17

Creative Embellishments is sponsoring the SWAT Drill #17 which is to use something that’s been fussy cut on your project.  Fussy cutting (sometimes called detailed cutting or fancy cutting) is one of my all time favorite techniques! Anything goes; a layout, card, tag, altered project, art journal page, etc. as long as you incorporate this technique on your project. 😀

For my example, I combined this technique with the sketch and suggested journaling theme (the journey) at Once Upon a Sketch. Here’s what I came up with:

Rise Above It

Here’s a close up of the Creative Embellishments Steampunk Hot Air balloon I used on my page. I altered it by applying a coat of Tim Holtz distress paint, then going over it with distress stain in a slightly darker shade. I then highlighted select areas with Smooch Ink in “cape cod” which is a lovely shade of blue:

Steampunk Debutante Mini Album – dt project for Creative Embellishments Oct challenge

The Creative Embellishments October challenge is to create a layout, card, tag, art journal page or altered project (really anything you want!) with a steampunk theme! You do NOT have use CE products in order to play along and this challenge is open to everyone, everywhere! This challenge also runs through the end of the month, so all entries are due by 11:59 pm EST (USA) on October 31, 2013. One randomly selected winner with receive a $20 gc to the CE Store! 😀

For my example, I used their gorgeous steampunk butterfly, a set of wings and one of the gear corner pieces that I cut pieces off of in order to decorate a steampunk mini album. Their fabulously detailed, laser-cut chipboard is so much fun to alter and work with! I’m not going to post pics of the whole album, just the cover and 2 spreads that use CE chippies so you can see. Here’s what I came up with:

This is with the cover closed:

Every Day Card – Entry for Cardabilities #83

Now that Alex is back in school and it’s his first year of Junior High, I wanted to make him a little card to let him know we’re thinking of him and to wish him a great day…every day. 🙂 Those are my last words to him as he get on the bus each day…”I love you! Have a great day at school!”

To make the card, I used an altered bus chippy by Creative Embellishments and some gears that I snipped off of one of their steampunk corner pieces. I paired those up with ABC Primer paper by Graphic 45, topped it off with a Prima flair button and diecut strips for the sentiment. Here’s what I came up with for the Cardabilities sketch #83:

Every Day card

Materials:

Creative Embellishments chipboard bus (smaller of the 2 pack) and gears
G45 ABC Primer paper
Prima flair
Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze
alpha stickers from my stash
Pitt big brush markers
Sizzix die
