Soar Tags

For my project today I was inspired by Tim Holtz’s March tag from 2015. I really loved working on these tags! So much fun getting in some crafty time and getting messy! 😀 I used different techniques products for the 2 backgrounds and altered my chipboard balloons using 2 different methods. For the tag on the left, I used Distress Stains and blotted my tag into the color on my non stick craft mat. For the tag on the right, I used distress paints and dragged the tag through the color, making sure I got good coverage for the base. I then used stazon ink in black and stamped light touches of the CE text stamp and brick, though most of that got covered by the time I was done. lol In TH’s example, he uses black ink and clear embossing powder for his stamped image, but wouldn’t you know my black ink ran out and I didn’t have a refill available, so I swiped my tags with a dryer sheet to help prevent stray bits of embossing powder from clinging to my background and used Versamark clear in with black embossing powder. I then used the same Steampunk Hot Air Balloon Stamp for both tags. I slipped on the tag on the left, as you can see, I smeared the image, but got it crisp on the one on the right. lol I used the same method for stenciling on both tags and just taped the tag to the back of the stencil to keep it from slipping and worked around the image rather than creating a mask. I immediately covered the modeling paste with embossing powder and set aside to allow it to dry fully before activating the embossing powder with a heat gun.

Though the 2 chipboard hot air balloons were both heat embossed, I altered them differently. For the one on the left, I used a versamark clear reinker and squeezed out a couple of drops onto my craft mat. I then dipped a paint brush into it and applied it to the areas I wanted purple, sprinkled it with the appropriate embossing powder and heat embossed that portion. Then coated the remaining portion lightly in gesso, applied the ink that part, and sprinkled it with a yellow embossing powder and heated that. For the one on the right, I coated the entire piece lightly with gesso, then colored the details with PITT markers, then used clear embossing powder on the whole piece to give it shine.

Dream of a Love Canvas

My project today was inspired by a quote from the book Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman (the quote is also in the movie). It’s part of a letter that one of the character writes and the portion I added to my project says, “Sometimes, when the wind is warm or the crickets sing…I dream of a love that even time will lie down and be still for.” It’s one of those lines that really sticks with you, even years after reading or hearing it. 😀 I am still trying to learn how to take pics of projects that are shimmery, so please excuse the poor quality of my photos. In real life, the colors are closer to the cell phone photo. I started out by applying crackle medium and then added the clock pieces and gears. Once that set, I applied a light coating of gesso onto the chippies and colored with acrylic paint. Then applied coarse pumice mixed with acrylic paint, bronze paint, and glass beads colored with Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magicals. I altered the heart piece the same way and applied that last. Here’s how it turned out…

My Buckaroo – CSI 198 and Creative Embellishments

Creative Embellishments is one of the sponsors for this month’s CSI, Color, Stories, Inspiration challenges, so several of us have been guest designing for some of their case files. 😀 They offer fun, inspiring challenges, with lots of prize ops, including the $30 gift voucher to the CE store that’s up for grabs! 😀 I had a blast solving case #198. The colors really work for me since blue is my favorite color and hey!…it’s also fave among my boys and my hubby! We all wear a lot of blue. lol Here’s how my page turned out:

For my evidence, I used stripes, trees, leaves, mesh, weather-related elements. I then combined hanging something, animals, and string by attaching 3 wood fish pieces with string and hanging it from the corner of the cardboard with a brad (though I did cut up and adhere the fish to my layout with foam dots so they wouldn’t tear off or get snagged on something else. 😀

I hope you enjoyed my project and are inspired to play along with the CSI challenges this month! We can’t wait to see what you create! 😀

Penn State York Bridge Building Contest

This year, Alex participated in the Penn State York Bridge Building Contest and came in 3rd! Everyone was pleasantly surprised since it’s rare for Freshmen to place at all. Most of the winners tend to be Juniors and Seniors each year. 😀 He was so proud of his creation (which shattered during testing, which happens to nearly all the bridges).

For this page, I was inspired by the CSI, Color Stories Inspiration case file #196 that we’re sponsoring. Be sure to check out their challenges this month for your chance to win the gc to the Creative Embellishments store that’s up for grabs, along with tons of other fabulous prizes! 😀 Here’s what I came up with:

I chose glasses, cogs, gears, technology accents, and circles for my evidence. Most of the pieces were altered using acrylic paints or mists. For the testimony, I incorporated the word, “technology” into my journaling. Here are some close ups of the layered pieces:
